About the Director

Lui Collins, director and teacher of Upside-Up Music, is a nationally-recognized folk singer/songwriter. An accomplished vocalist, guitarist, and banjo player, she has toured professionally for over 30 years, and has been performing for and working with children since the early 1980's. Children were among Lui's most avid fans even before she began giving children's concerts. Along with the genuineness of her presentation, the beauty and magic of her music seem to entrance people of all ages. Her children's concerts evolved naturally, starting with story hours at the local library with her own children, performing in local schools, and leading songwriting workshops for the students.

In 1992 Collins became involved with the Grumbling Gryphons Children's Theater Arts Camp. That year she wrote "Peace on Earth" for the culminating production, and in 1993, the song "Sedna," based on an Inuit myth, from her collaboration with the children.

Collins recorded albums for Philo and Green Linnet Records before founding her own label, Molly Gamblin Music, in 1993. At the urging of audience members, Collins released North of Mars: A Bunch of Kids' Songs in 1995. This highly acclaimed album was awarded a Parents' Choice Honor for 1995. Shoofly, a children's cassette magazine, featured several songs from North of Mars on its Fall 1995 volume. NPR's All Things Considered recommended the CD, calling it "beautifully rendered." Collins has 8 solo CD's to her credit, including her 2006 Waterbug release, Closer, and a collection of poetry, Moon of Ripe Berries, published in 2001.

Ms. Collins' formal music education included classical studies on piano, violin, French horn, and music theory. She holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Connecticut. In 2002 Collins successfully completed the Music Together® Teaching Workshop developed by the Center for Music and Young Children, Princeton, New Jersey. In April 2005, having demonstrated outstanding achievement in teaching, musicianship, program philosophy, and parent education, Ms. Collins was awarded Music Together Certification Level I by the Center for Music and Young Children.
